My child is 7 years old. Which Earobics® program should he/she use?
-
Step 1 is particularly for children ages 4-7 and contains six interactive games.
All the games in the Earobics® programs are colorful and engaging,
making learning fun! Earobics® Step 1 targets phonemic awareness,
auditory memory, and auditory discrimination skills. We recommend Step 1 if your child is
beginning to learn basic phonics skills such as rhyming, short and long vowels, or blending sounds to
form words (e.g.; "base + ball" or "ti + ger"). Earobics® Step 1 is
appropriate for children who are struggling with auditory discrimination skills (e.g., mop-top), short
term memory skills (e.g., identifying sounds or words in sequence), and auditory attention skills
(e.g., attending to auditory signal).
- Step 2 is appropriate
for children ages 7-10 and includes 5 games. Step 2 provides advanced levels of play
for skills targeted in Step 1. In addition, Step 2 targets reading comprehension
skills. We recommend Step 2 for children who completed Step 1 but need
additional help with auditory sequential memory, phoneme identification and discrimination,
and phoneme sequencing skills.
What are the target areas of the Adolescent and Adult version of Earobics®?
This program is designed specifically to help older students and adults who have difficulty
with reading and spelling. The games are designed to improve phonological awareness and auditory processing
skills.
What is the difference between the Clinician/Specialist version and the Home version of Earobics
®? Both versions include the same fun and interactive games with the
same skill levels. Uses the clinician/specialist with up to 12 students and one guest at a time.
Once a student has completed the program, delete his/her name and add another student. It also allows
the clinician/specialist to manage student progress through setting play levels, printing progress reports,
and password protection.
The
home version is only for two players and one guest. Once the students complete the program,
you cannot delete their names.
How do I know if Earobics® Software is appropriate for my students?
-
Test of Phonological Awareness (TOPA) This test is for ages 5;0 to 8;11 and measures
the ability to isolate individual phonemes in spoken words. Two versions are available: TOPA
Kindergarten and TOPA Early Elementary.
-
Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP) Ages 5;0 to 24;11. Assesses
phonological awareness, phonological memory, and rapid naming skills.
-
Lindamood Auditory Conceptualization Test (LAC) Ages Pre-K to Adult. Measures the
ability to discriminate one speech sound phoneme from another and to segment a spoken word into its
phonemic units.
- Test of Word Reading Efficiency (TOWRE)
Ages 6;0 to 24;11. Used to assess reading accuracy and fluency.
- Test of Auditory-Perceptual Skills-Revised
(TAPS-R) Ages 4 to 13. Assessment tool used to diagnose auditory perceptual difficulties,
imperceptions of auditory modality, language problems, and/or learning problems in children.
Can I use Earobics® on more than one computer?
Yes, you may load Earobics
® onto more than one computer; however, because the program
requires the CD, you can only use Earobics
® on one computer at a time. Check your
license agreement for details.
Can I change my password? Yes! If you forget your password or you want to change the
password, enter the override password of 052096.
How do I turn off my password? This only pertains to the
Clinician/Specialist version. Below are the directions to turn off the password.
1. Start the program. The program will automatically bring you to the main menu.
2. Click the 2nd button on the upper right hand corner of the screen entitled "Password Controls."
3. Click "off" button.
4. Click "save changes."
*Please note: You will still need to use your password to delete a student from the main menu so keep
your password handy!
How long does it take to complete the Earobics® program?
Program completion depends on the child's age and skill level. If the child plays consistently 3 days a week
for 20 minutes a day, completion of the program should take approximately 3-6 months.
Earobics® Step 1 and
Earobics® Adolescent and Adult versions have
309 levels to play;
Earobics Step 2 has 593 levels of play. Each game stays at one level of
play until students master that skill, and then they move to the next level of play. A speech pathologist or
other professional familiar with the goals of the program should always monitor progress.
