SCIP FAQs
What happens if I forget my SCIP™ password?  There is no way to retrieve your password if you forget it.You have to uninstall the program and reinstall it. You will lose all of your saved data. Make your password something simple that you can easily remember, and make sure you write it down in a place you can find it.
Does the program talk to the student, speak the words on the screen, or record responses?  No. SCIP™ does not have any verbal components or record any auditory responses.
How many pictures/words are included in SCIP™?  There are 2,350 real words and over 6,000 nonsense words.
What do the pictures look like?  Click here to view sample pictures online.
Can I print the pictures in color?  Yes. The pictures print in color or black and white.
Can I vary the size of the pictures?  No. On the computer screen, the pictures appear approximately 1 1/2” x 1 1/2”. When you print the pictures, they are 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”. You can print 4 pictures to a page on perforated card stock or regular paper.

You can buy card stock from Super Duper® (Item TPX-30003).
Can I use SCIP™ for traditional articulation therapy in addition to treating phonology disorders?  You can use a traditional articulation approach with SCIP™, or you can use one of the following four contrastive approaches:
  • Minimal Pairs
  • Maximal Oppositions
  • Multiple Oppositions
  • Treatment of the Empty Set
Dr. Williams thoroughly explains each of these four approaches in the SCIP™ user manual.

What is a treatment profile?  The treatment profile is a list of words created to use in therapy. The treatment profile is based on one of the four approaches mentioned above. A treatment profile usually is a list of five to ten word pairs or sets.
What if I just want to print pictures and not create a treatment profile?   The opening menu has a button labeled "Print Illustrations" at the bottom of the screen. Click on this button to select and print pictures without creating a treatment profile. You can sort illustrations alphabetically, by word-initial sound, or by word-final sound. The list also includes word-initial clusters, which are listed separately from the singleton (individual) sounds.

Data is recorded during treatment by clicking on the target picture. One click on a target picture is recorded as an incorrect response. Two clicks is a correct response. For correct responses, a smiley face appears to the right of the picture.
Can I change a response?  Yes. If you have not moved to the next screen/set of pictures, you can click on any of the target pictures to change the response you recorded. For example, if you clicked two times, but meant to click just once, you can click again, and it will change to an incorrect response.
How do I record data away from the computer?   When you print the pictures, a data form prints at the same time. This form will match the treatment set you chose. Use this form to record data during your treatment session. Later, go back to the same treatment profile and select it. At the bottom of the page, click "Enter Offline Data." Enter the data you recorded earlier.
Can I use these treatment approaches with groups?   Yes. You may use the treatment approaches with up to three students when working on the computer.
Do the students in the group have to work on the same goals?  No. Students working in a group setting can have different goals and work on different sounds.

Is there a limit to the number of treatment profiles I can create?  You may create treatment profiles for an unlimited number of students.
Can students work alone on the computer?  Students should work with a speech-language pathologist when using this program on the computer. The program does not record the student's voice or give any feedback on the student's production of the target word.
Can more than one SLP use SCIP™?  SCIP™ can be used by an unlimited number of SLPs but only one person can use the program on the computer at a time since SCIP™ runs from a CD-ROM. Print the pictures and data sheets if more than one SLP at a time needs to use SCIP™.
Can I load SCIP™ onto more than one computer?  Yes. However, in order to run SCIP™, you must have the disc loaded in the computer you are using.
Will files transfer to another computer?  Yes. Record the data on any storage device and save on a different computer. Detailed instructions are given in the JIT section of SCIP™ and in the User Manual.
Is it OK to involve students in data collection, allowing them to click the mouse on the correct spot?  Yes. Feel free to involve students in data collection, especially to facilitate students' self-monitoring of their sound productions.
