Listening Comprehension Scale (LCS) The LCS is a measure of receptive language for ages 3–21. Using a convenient easel, the examiner reads a verbal stimulus aloud. The examinee responds by indicating a picture on the examinee's side of the easel. Correct responses are on the examiner's side of the easel and on the record form. Oral Expression Scale (OES) OES is also for ages 3-21. The examinee either answers a question, completes a sentence, or generates one or more sentences in response to a visual/ verbal stimulus. The record form includes common correct and incorrect responses. For the OES, the examiner can do a preliminary tally and then consult the item-by-item scoring rules to determine scores of particular items. Neither scale requires reading by the examinee. OWLS also provides you with Descriptive Analysis Worksheet Masters that allow you to categorize responses by item type (lexical, syntactic, pragmatic, and supralinguistic). (1995) Written Expression Scale (WES) Co-normed with the OWLS Oral Language Scales, the WES is a language-based writing assessment. This test offers an authentic assessment of writing skills in children through young adults (ages 5-21 years). You can administer this easy to use test individually or in groups with an average administration time between 15-25 minutes. Scoring is simple using the detailed guidelines and samples of actual responses. The OWLS “Descriptive Analysis” provides vital information for goal writing and intervention planning. (1996) ASSIST™ Computer Scoring Scoring gets even easier with the optional AGS Computer ASSIST™ for the OWLS LC/OE or OWLS WE. These Windows® and Macintosh® compatible CD-ROMs give you many report options, such as score profile, suggested exercises by grade range, narrative report, and item responses. Description Administration is easy Neither scale requires reading by the examinee. Descriptive Analysis Worksheet Masters that allow you to categorize responses by item type (lexical, syntactic, pragmatic, and supralinguistic) are provided. Scoring is fast and reliable The LCS easel and the record form contain correct responses for each item for on-the-spot scoring. For the OES, the examiner may do a preliminary tally and then consult the item-by-item scoring rules to determine scores of particular items. Validity The manual reports correlations of OWLS scales with other measures of receptive and expressive language as well as with tests of cognitive ability and academic achievement. Also, the score profiles of seven clinical groups are compared with matched control samples. Features
- Thorough assessment of listening comprehension, oral expression, and written expression
- Easy administration with detailed scoring guidelines
- Useful information that helps in the IEP process
- Comprehensive results (score profiles, narrative reports, and suggested follow-up exercises)
Scores/Interpretation: Age-based norms can be used in learning disabilities assessments to meet requirements of P.L. 94-142 (IDEA, P.L. 101-476). Raw scores can be converted to standard scores (m=100, SD=15), percentile ranks, normal curve equivalents, stanines, and test-age equivalents. |
