CASL-2 & OPUS Combo Kit

The OPUS shares the same underlying theory as the CASL-2. Since both tests are based on the author’s Integrative Language Theory, they provide a cohesive evaluation across a broad range of language areas. The CASL-2 offers an in-depth picture of spoken language skills while the OPUS evaluates a person’s ability to listen to passages that are read aloud and recall information about them. Although the OPUS is an excellent companion test to the CASL-2, you can also use it on its own anytime you need to quickly measure listening comprehension.

For children and young adults ages 3 to 21;11, the CASL-2 measures spoken language across four structural categories:

  • Lexical/Semantic: Knowledge and use of words and word combinations
  • Syntactic: Knowledge and use of grammar
  • Supralinguistic: Knowledge and use of language in which meaning is not directly available from the surface lexical and syntactic information
  • Pragmatic Language: Knowledge of language that is appropriate across different situational contexts and ability to modify language according to the social situation

Within these categories, 14 stand-alone tests give you the flexibility to measure only the specific area or areas that interest you. Interpret each test separately and/or combine test scores to get a wider picture of oral language skills. The CASL-2 tests feature extended age ranges in order to start assessing and intervening earlier, as well as track progress in the same child over many years. Many of the tests now include younger ages, and all of them extend to age 21;11.

The OPUS assesses the comprehension of spoken language in a natural context, a skill that is fundamental to classroom learning. It evaluates the ability to integrate and apply knowledge in three structural categories of language:

  • Lexical/Semantic: Knowledge and use of words and word combinations
  • Syntactic: Knowledge and use of grammar
  • Supralinguistic: Knowledge and use of language in which meaning is not directly available from the surface lexical and syntactic information

Measuring higher-level comprehension skills, including inference and prediction, yields more detailed information beyond simply whether or not the individual can comprehend. These skills require deeper processing abilities and thus differentiate typically developing individuals from those with language and learning delays or disorders.

The OPUS and CASL-2 are co-normed, supporting the validity of both tests and making them wonderful companions.     The CASL 2 is the perfect global language assessment; it encompasses all areas of language including pragmatics. The administration is simple with easy to follow guidelines and reminders for repetition and basal/ceiling. The test kit itself is heavy and takes quite a bit of time to administer. You can easily stop between subtests if needed. Includes in-the-moment scoring guidelines for common dialectical differences.
