The Test of Problem Solving-2 Adolescent (TOPS-2 Adolescent) assesses language-based, critical thinking abilities. The TOPS-2 Adolescent focuses on cognitive processes such as self-regulation, inference, analysis, evaluation, insight, problem solving, interpretation, explanation, and decision making. Test items require a student to pay careful attention, process, and think about what they hear and read. When responding to test items, students must think about problems with a purpose in mind, resist the urge to be impulsive, and express answers verbally.

TOPS-2 Adolescent has 5 subtests (18 reading passages):

Valid and Reliable

After conducting an item pool study (526 subjects) and standardization study (1,051 subjects), the test-retest coefficient is .91 and the SEM is 3.56 for the total test, indicating satisfactory levels of reliability for all tasks. Construct and contrasted group validity testing indicates that the TOPS-2 Adolescent clearly discriminates between normal and language disordered subjects, as t-Values are .01 at all age levels. Ninety-four percent of individual items showed statistically significant pass/fail correlations with the subtest scores.
