The Test of Semantic Skills-Primary (TOSS-P) allows speech language pathologists to analyze receptive and expressive semantic skills that are crucial to conversation, reading comprehension, and academic achievement. The TOSS-P is a receptive and expressive diagnostic test designed to assess a student’s semantic skills; it yields specific information about a student’s semantic and vocabulary abilities. This assessment uses six common themes and twenty realistic line-illustrations depicting natural, real-life experiences. Analyses of receptive and expressive scores allow for comparison of verbal and nonverbal performance.
The TOSS-P has10 subtests:
  • Identifying Labels
  • Identifying Categories
  • Identifying Attributes
  • Identifying Functions
  • Identifying Definitions
  • Stating Labels
  • Stating Categories
  • Stating Attributes
  • Stating Functions
  • Stating Definitions
Valid and Reliable
The TOSS-P standardization included 1,510 subjects; demographics of test subjects closely mirror the US Census data. The TOSS-P is a reliable measure, as the average reliability coefficient is .86. Additionally, there is no evidence to suggest consistent differences in performance by race/socioeconomic status at the item level.
For ages 9;0-13;11 please refer to the Test of Semantic Skills-Intermediate.
