The Social Emotional Evaluation (SEE) evaluates the social skills and higher-level language that students need to interact successfully in everyday situations at home, school, and in the community. The SEE presents typical social situations and common emotional reactions that elementary and middle school students encounter frequently. It is ideal for identifying social and emotional language needs of students with autism spectrum disorders, emotional disorders, learning disabilities, or attention deficit disorders.

To ensure consistent administration of auditory stimuli, audio files for Sections III (Understanding Social Gaffes) and IV (Understanding Conflicting Messages) are available online at https://www.proedsoftware.com/see/. Use the Teacher/Parent Questionnaire as a quick screening tool to help determine whether you need to administer the full evaluation or confirm test results.

The SEE includes one supplemental subtest and four core subtests for assessing social language:

  • Supplemental Subtest: Recognizing Facial Expressions evaluates a student’s awareness and recognition of same-person facial expressions. The six universally recognized basic emotional categories (i.e., happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, and surprise) and neutral expressions are featured in the test items.
  • Subtest I: Identifying Common Emotions assesses a student’s ability to identify common emotions when shown four illustrations of different facial expressions (e.g., mad, scared, surprised).
  • Subtest II: Identifying Emotional Reactions assesses a student’s ability to recognize emotional reactions when shown an illustration of a face by identifying the most logical cause when shown three to four illustrations (i.e., receptive ability). Then, the examiner evaluates the student’s ability to name the emotional reaction (i.e., expressive ability).
  • Understanding Social Gaffes evaluates the ability to recognize social gaffes that result in peer conflicts. First, the student is shown an illustration of a social situation while listening to an audio clip. Then, the student identifies if everyone in the situation is doing the right thing (i.e., receptive ability). If the student identifies a social gaffe, he/she is asked, “Who is doing the wrong thing?” and “What should he/she have done?” (i.e., expressive ability).
  • Understanding Conflicting Messages assesses a student’s ability to recognize conflicts of interpersonal communications caused by incongruities between verbal and non-verbal aspects. The student is shown an illustration of a social scene while listening to an audio clip. Next, the student is asked if the speaker meant what he/she said (i.e., receptive ability). If the student recognizes that the verbal message did not express the full intent, he/she is asked, “Why did he/she say that?” (i.e., expressive ability).

Valid and Reliable

The standardization samples for the SEE included over 800 children for the standardization sample and closely resembles U.S. Census Bureau Data for 2007. Test–retest and inter-rater reliability were all very high and over .88.

    It is very hard to find a social skills assessment is norm-referenced. This assessment is helpful in justifying the need for services in an educational setting. I particularly like the more advanced sub-tests, which involve perspective taking, recognizing sarcasm, etc.

    I really enjoy the diagnostic assessments that Super Duper offers as well as the treatment tools.
