The Pragmatic Language Skills Inventory (PLSI) is an easy-to-use, norm-referenced rating scale designed to assess children's pragmatic language abilities. Its 45 items can be administered in only 5-10 minutes. The PLSIhas three subscales::

  • Personal Interaction Skills (initiating conversation, asking for help, participating in verbal games, and using appropriate nonverbal gestures)
  • Social Interaction Skills (when to talk and when to listen, understanding classroom rules, taking turns in conversations, and predicting consequences)
  • Classroom Interaction Skills (using figurative language, maintaining topic, explaining how things work, writing stories, and using slang)

Examiner’s manual provides cut-off scores for determining whether or not a student exhibits a pragmatic language disorder and includes guidelines for interpreting results.

  1. Parent and Teacher Friendly
The PLSI was recommended to me by a SLP/BCBA colleague who had been using it for several years. For over a year now, it also has been my "go to" pragmatics inventory. It's parent and teacher friendly, standardized, and identifies specific areas for instruction. Is an upper extension of this test being planned? The high school SLP on my team says she wants one!

  2. Excellent
This is a very nice questionnaire for classroom staff that helps clarify the students actual use of various pragmatic language skills across 3 levels within the day-to-day classroom. It's been an excellent source of information from people who work with the student and their peers when a question exists of whether a student actually uses his skills in real world settings.

  3. Useless test don't waste your money!
I should have questioned why so little information was provided about this test in the product description. This is nothing more than a questionnaire with a 9 point rating scale based on my impression of how a child compares to his peers. I can't believe that a subjective opinion is the basis for normative data. I expected a test that provided standard scores would use objective measures to calculate scores.

I enjoy your products and love your language games/activities. I would like more interactive products and language stimulating toys for early childhood. I work with many pre-kindergarten students and would benefit from a larger variety of products for children at this age. I love the fluency enhancing tools and the Magne Talk activities.

As a mother of a fourth-grader who has Asperger's, I particularly enjoy all of the games and social skills activities that you have available. All of your products appear to be so fun and enjoyable for the kids, that they probably don't even realize that they are picking up some very important life skills while they are playing them. That's important, because, after all, why shouldn't social skills games be just as entertaining as any childrens game? You guys obviously 'get' kids ---thanks!!!
