The Test of Childhood Stuttering (TOCS) provides clinicians and researchers with a sound method for assessing a child’s speech fluency skills and stuttering-related behaviors. TOCS helps identify children who stutter, determines the severity of the stuttering, and documents changes in a child’s fluency functioning over time.

TOCS has three major components:

The Standardized Speech Fluency Measure – Four speech fluency tasks identify children who stutter and rate the severity of their stuttering. Tasks include:

  • Rapid Picture Naming – Child names a series of 40 pictures as quickly as possible, determining how fluently he/she can produce single words in a time-stressed context.
  • Modeled Sentences – Child views two pictures. Examiner says a sentence about one of the pictures. Child produces a sentence containing the same syntactic structure in order to evaluate his/her ability to respond fluently.
  • Structured Conversation – Child answers open-ended questions about a sequence of eight pictures, evaluating the child’s ability to speak fluently in a dialogue context.
  • Narration – Child must generate a story based on a series of pictures, assessing child’s ability to speak fluently in a monologue context.

The Observational Rating Scale
The Speech Fluency Rating Scale and the Disfluency-Related Consequences Rating Scale enable the examiner to gather information about the child’s stuttering and related behaviors from parents, teachers, and others who know the child well.

The Supplemental Clinical Assessment
These fluency-related assessments enable the examiner to probe disfluency-related data in detail using:

  • Clinical interviews
  • Comprehensive analysis of disfluency frequency and types
  • Speech rate analysis
  • Disfluency duration analysis
  • Repetition length analysis
  • Associated behavior analysis
  • Stuttering frequency analysis
  • Speech naturalness analysis

  1. Love this test
    Quality
    100%
This test was purchased to replace the SSI4 and it has done a wonderful job! It is easy to administer and score. Wishing I would have upgraded to this sooner.

  2. I enjoy your products and...
I enjoy your products and love your language games/activities. I would like more interactive products and language stimulating toys for early childhood. I work with many pre-kindergarten students and would benefit from a larger variety of products for children at this age. I love the fluency enhancing tools and the Magne Talk activities.
