- LCS Testing Time: 10–20 minutes
- OES Testing Time: 10–30 minutes

- Qualification Level: B
The OWLS-II evaluates four language processes on four separate scales: Listening Comprehension, Oral Expression, Reading Comprehension, and Written Expression. Each of these scales assesses four linguistic structures:
- Lexical/Semantics
- Syntax
- Pragmatics
- Supralinguistics
Because it looks at the same linguistic structures across four distinct language processes, the OWLS-II provides an unusually detailed, coherent, and integrated assessment. Although its four scales can be used separately, together they give you a comprehensive score profile that pinpoints language delays, identifies strengths and weaknesses in all areas, and guides intervention.
Listening Comprehension Scale (LCS)
The LCS uses a convenient easel to measure receptive language. The examiner reads a stimulus word aloud, and the student responds by indicating one of four pictures that best depicts the meaning of the word. Correct responses are printed on the examiner’s side of the easel and on the Record Form—permitting easy, on-the-spot scoring.
Oral Expression Scale (OES)
The OES, with its own handy easel, measures expressive language, requiring the examinee to answer questions, finish sentences, and generate sentences in response to visual and oral prompts. To simplify scoring, common responses (correct and incorrect) are printed on the Record Form. In addition, alternate acceptable responses are now provided to accommodate students who speak African-American English or similar dialect.
Scores in Several Useful Formats
All four scales provide age- and grade-based standard scores, test-age equivalents, percentile ranks, and descriptive labels (Exceptional, Above Average, Average, Below Average, or Possibly Disordered). Scale scores can be combined to produce five Composites: Oral Language, Written Language, Receptive Processing, Expressive Processing, and Overall Language Processing.
Use the OWLS-II to:
- Identify students with learning disabilities, language disorders, and related difficulties in accordance with IDEA requirements
- Design targeted interventions that address potential academic difficulties
- Monitor progress, using the new alternate form
- Gather longitudinal data for research purposes
The OWLS-II LC/OE Kit includes: Examiner’s Manual, Listening Comprehension Easel, Oral Expression Easel, Foundations of Language Assessment, Record Forms (10), and carrying case. (2012)

LOVE THIS!I love the new OWLS-II. It is easy to use, very comprehensive, and quick to administer. We use this test at all of the charter schools that we serve through my speech business. I use this with almost all of my language students. This helps me know if I need to do further assessments and in which areas.

New OWL-2Great pictures, really like the updated OWL-2
-
Improved! The OWLS-II is much more improved than than the former version. The language is more understandable. Its illustrations reflect diverse cultures. It also includes assessment of some prereading skills required of preschool children. The record forms are more pleasing to the eye and makes it easier for answers to be recorded. Overall great improvement!

GreatThis is a great assessment tool. Only item that concerns me is the pictures. I wish they were not drawings but actul pictures.
-
GreatI have used this test when working in the school system and now with home health. It is a great tool for the older kids, bringing a variety of language tasks (i.e., create a sentence using..., idioms, complex language statements, plurals, pronouns, etc). It is straight forward and the protocol is easy to follow.

I enjoy your products and...I enjoy your products and love your language games/activities. I would like more interactive products and language stimulating toys for early childhood. I work with many pre-kindergarten students and would benefit from a larger variety of products for children at this age. I love the fluency enhancing tools and the Magne Talk activities.
