CAAP-2 - New Norms, New Age Ranges!

The Clinical Assessment of Articulation and Phonology, Second Edition (CAAP-2) is the most current assessment for articulation and phonology. It is time-efficient, accurate, and yields results that are easy to score and interpret. You can administer the Articulation Inventory in 15-20 minutes. The checklist approach to assessing phonological processes virtually eliminates the need for phonetic transcription. CAAP-2 is an assessment that you will like giving and children will enjoy taking!

Qualify students for therapy with:

  • Word standard scores
  • Sentence standard scores
  • Phonology standard scores

Articulation Inventory targets:

  • Pre- and postvocalic consonant singletons
  • Cluster words containing S, R, and L in the initial position
  • Three- and four-syllable words
  • Postvocalic productions of R
  • Production of sounds in sentences (for children 5 years and older)

Phonological Process Checklist Assesses:

  • Final consonant deletion
  • Cluster reduction
  • Syllable reduction
  • Gliding
  • Vocalization
  • Fronting (velar and palatal)
  • Deaffrication
  • Stopping
  • Prevocalic voicing
  • Postvocalic devoicing

Valid and Reliable

CAAP-2 is a valid and reliable instrument. The CAAP-2 standardization sample included 1,486 children from the U.S. and closely resembles 2013 U.S. Census Data. Concurrent validity studies comparing CAAP-2 to the GFTA-2 and the KLPA-2 were significant beyond p<.01 for all raw scores, standard scores, and percentile ranks (ranging from .789 to .948). Inter-rater reliability coefficients were all above .99.

    Thanks for the opportunity to review the Clinical Assessment of Articulation and Phonology (CAAP) by Secord and Donohue in my class ...The timing could not have been better in that the 16 undergraduate seniors in my class, Diagnosis and Appraisal of Communicative Disorders, just began their study on articulation/phonology. They loved the test and had a comparative basis with tests learned previously. They specifically liked the lovely, easily identifiable pictures, the characters, and the carry-all bag for the diagnostic kit. Regarding technical aspects, they highly commended the protocols’ ease of scoring and categories of diagnostic information included such as consonant inventory, comprehensive phonological process review, standard scores, indices, normative information, and more-- User friendly and a comprehensive assessment! The students all proclaimed this as their test!

  12. I think the CAAP is...
    I think the CAAP is the perfect assessment. It is thorough, yet quick and very easy to administer which is a bonus for a school SLP in which time is everything.. It is also extremely kid friendly which lends to a more engaged child and more accurate results. In the past, I've had to administer two separate assessments to get comprehensive information in both articulation (phonetics) and phonology. Now, I can get the information I need from one assessment in less time! JoAnn and Wayne have been my mentors for nearly 10 years now and I am not surprised they put out what I feel is the best assessment tool around!

    I have used the CAAP once before but never truly appreciated it until I bought my own. my preschool clients love the characters! They are very motivated to say their words when the characters are listening. I really appreceiate the phonological process scoring tool. It really helps with identifying phonological processes. I only wish the CAAP was standardized up to age 18 or 21. Overall a really great artic test and an unbeatable value!

    I bought the CAAP to use as an articulation test as I begin my private private practice. My initial attraction to the test was the price. The test is very easy to give. I like the words that have been chosen to assess articulation, and I also like the fact that the same sound is assessed several times. Having a phonology worksheet as part of the test helps save a lot of time. Overall, the believe the CAAP is a great assessment tool, and I look forward to using it many more times.

  18. Finally, a child-friendly assessment!
    I recently purchased the CAAP for my mobile therapy practice. I am very satisfied with it's ease of use and kid-friendly appearance. My clients' eyes literally light up when they see the colorful bag coming through the door! Not only is this assessment fun, but also the pictures are well-recognized and the scoring is quite simple. Responses from the articulation sheet are later easily converted to the phonological processes checklist with no further testing needed. If you are an SLP in search of a fun and reliable assessment for both articulation and phonology, I highly recommend the CAAP.

    I absolutely LOVE using this test with younger students (4K-1st or 2nd grade)!! The children love playing with the CAAP pals while I tell them the story and listen for their sounds!! Many times they don't even feel like they are being tested. I highly prefer this test to the GFTA!!! Awesome!!!

    I love the new hear builder following directions and phonological awareness CD. The areas align with state standards. The graphics are wonderful and my students loved the demo.     I have recently begun using the CAAP for assessment of preschoolers. I really enjoy using it. Thank you for including so many tables and checklists for analysis of articulation and phonology. I really appreciate that some of the charts are available without charge on the Super Duper website. The children really enjoy the pictures and the figures. It is great to have a multisyllabic section. I am enjoying a multitude of pronunciations of the word helicopter from my little ones. Thank you for this great tool.
